Often times in our career we find ourselves at a place where we dread waking up in the morning and going to work. Yes, this happens from time to time.  We walk through our office doors and start counting down the hours just to walk right back out and go on with our lives. If someone asked you these questions your answers will probably be as following. Are we feeling challenged? No. Bored? Yes. Happy? Ehhh. Fulfilled? Not even the slightest.

And if you answered these questions with the same answers or ones very similar, then it’s probably time for a change. If your having thoughts like, “How do I get started? Where do I begin? What do I even want in a job?” Then this is a read for you. I want to share with you some of the attributes you should look for when searching for a job. Of course, these aren’t all of the things you should consider, but some from my experience that I consider important.

1. Work for a company that gets you excited.

Not every job you have in your career is going to be your dream job. But when you start your job search, you should be looking for a company that excites you! Whether that be the type of work and projects they do, to the industry or company culture you will be apart of.  What appealed to me when I was looking for a job, was Focus GTS values and culture. I can say from every interaction we handle on both the client and candidate side to our Innovations Fridays, our values are truly ingrained in our culture and I’m proud to be a part of this company!

2. Find the right people, with the right culture.

I believe this is a MUST. As the old saying goes, “You become whom you are surrounded by”, or “the bird’s feathers flock together”. When looking for a new job you want to find a place where you are going to fit in with the current culture. Let’s not forget you are spending 40+ hrs with these people, so you can be picky.  If you are an achiever who is constantly pushing themselves to be better, yet the company you are interviewing with is not innovative enough or lacks drive, then it might not be a good fit. I believe you should always surround yourself with people who are better than you.

3. Find a place where you will be challenged.

I cannot stress this enough. Ultimately, you are in charge of challenging yourself every day, but I will say this, it is a lot easier to challenge yourself when your peers are challenging you. You should always be building upon the skills you have and ever expanding. Before leaving my previous job, as a video specialist, there came a time where I felt as I hit my peak. I wasn’t calling the shots. I was editing training videos for MLMs. Not exciting work at all. But when I looked into working with Focus GTS,  I didn’t know much about the recruitment space or the Tech space I was challenged by that. Since being here, I have not only learned so much about these areas but also how to market in this new industry. Coming to work for this company, has brought so many good challenges that in a 2 month period I can definitely see my capacity to manage, market and create has been stretched. I can’t wait to see who I will be a year from now.
